Hyattsville’s Meadery Gets Ready to Brew

The Route 1 corridor’s first meadery should have its inaugural batches ready by the end of summer.

Maryland Meadworks, which has been setting up shop in the space next to  just south of downtown Hyattsville, needs to have its final Use and Occupancy inspection before it can start brewing, founder Ken Carter told the Hyattsville Wire.

From there, it’s “approximately one and a half months to have our first two batches ready,” he said. “Brewing time can vary between three weeks and six months or more depending on the style.”

Carter uses a newly developed nutrient feeding process to speed up fermentation, which previously would have taken as long as a year. The technique makes mead much more financially viable, one reason it’s making such a comeback.

The meadery will join nearby Pizzeria Paradiso, which has an excellent beer menu; the upcoming Streetcar 82 Brewing Co. taproom, local mainstay Franklins; and the upcoming Sangfroid Distilling, which will make brandy, whiskey and Dutch gin.

Throw in a stop at Vigilante Coffee and an event at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, Polka Dot Park or Busboys and Poets and South Hyattsville has the makings for a regular pub crawl-type event that could attract locals and visitors. (Even better: Time it to coincide with Art Works Now’s regular Parents’ Night Out program for kids.)

And that’s not to mention Denizens Brewing Co. which will bring its second location to a 12,000-square-foot space at Riverdale Park Station in 2019.

Times really change…the guy who founded Hyattsville as a refuge from wild, alcohol-soaked Bladensburg must be rolling in his grave!

Let him roll and give me my MEAD!!
