A new art gallery and studio space is coming to Brentwood.

The soon-to-open Studio 3807 mixed-use complex will include 3,000 square feet of artists’ studios and gallery space managed by local artist John Paradiso.

Portico Gallery and Studios will have at least five exhibitions a year, with regular viewing hours from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays and noon to 3 p.m. Sundays as well as by appointment.

“Curating shows is pretty organic for me,” Paradiso told the Hyattsville Wire. “It can start with an idea or a studio visit with a new artist, or even a conversation with an artist I have known for years.”

In addition to the exhibition space, Portico is also home to five visual art studio spaces that will be occupied by local artists. Those will join the two annual studio tours on Route 1 and be open to the public during exhibitions.

Paradiso will also be rotating artwork on the walls of four common areas in the apartment complex every two months, with a modest honorarium going to the artists.

And he’ll be hosting four artists’ talks in the Studio 3807 media lounge, bringing musicians, dancers, authors and others to talk about their art.

Paradiso, who has lived with his partner, artist Tom Hill, in Brentwood since 2003, previously managed the 39th Street Gallery at the Gateway Arts Center for eight years. He’s encouraging any artists who are interested in working with the gallery to email him directly at portico@studio3807.com.

“As the resident artist/curator at Portico I am looking forward to meeting artists who are interested in getting their work out into the world,” he said. “I want to meet artists and do studio visits and when possible show as much work as I can.”
