Major New Arts Center Opening This Month

Design Army At Yolk Hyattsville art space

A well-known H Street graphic design firm is opening a 10,000-square-foot artists space in a warehouse district not far from the Route 1 corridor.

Design Army, which has an impressive client list ranging from local chocolate factory Harper Macaw to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Hong Kong Ballet, will hold a preview of its new creative space At Yolk later this month. The opening date is not yet scheduled.

Located in an otherwise nondescript part of unincorporated Prince George’s County near the Cheverly Metro Station at 5600 Tuexedo Rd in Hyattsville, At Yolk will have a photo studio, a professional kitchen and spaces that can be rearranged for everything from a TED-style talk to a movie screening to a live music performance.

The space is the brainchild of Design Army co-founder Pum Lefebure and her husband, Jake, who were looking for something more creative than another ad campaign — the same motivation that drove them to create the popular D/City magazine for a client. The space may be used by them, their associates and clients or other groups looking for a space.

“A lot of people have artistry, but we don’t have a space in this city,” Lefebure told AdWeek. “We have one of the best museums in the world, the Smithsonian, the National Gallery of Art. And it’s great for Van Gogh, but for the kids who are starting out, they’re just not going to get into the Smithsonian. There’s that missing place.”

While it has a Hyattsville address, it’s technically not in the Gateway Arts District, though At Yolk could help drive more arts-related growth this way. Already, big publications such as 99U and AdWeek have taken notice of At Yolk.

“Lefebure envisions a glittering future of photo shoots, TEDx events, dance performances, test kitchen dinners, and free painting classes for students on the weekends,” noted 99U. “There are dressing rooms for models and dancers in an upstairs balcony, a workshop, and garage doors so cars can drive in for commercials.”
