Proteus Bicycles to Move Near Mom’s Organic

Proteus Bicycles College Park new location Hollywood Maryland

This winter, Proteus Bicycles will move to a new, more spacious location next to Mom’s Organic Market in College Park.

The locally owned bicycle shop, which had been at the same location at 9217 Baltimore Ave. since 1972, had been looking for a new space for a while when it heard about the opening in the Hollywood Shopping Center.

Owner Laurie Lemieux told the Hyattsville Wire that it made sense to anchor a shopping mall along with an organic grocer, and the new location will have a larger parking lot, sidewalk ramps and access to the Rhode Island Avenue Trolley Trail. The city is also planning a new park nearby that will increase bike access.

In addition, the new location will have indoor bike parking, early morning bike drop off and pick up and space for fitness classes and other amenities.

“We’ve always been involved in the community and this space will give us room to host more events and clinics,” she said. “Since we’re right off the Rhode Island Avenue Trolley Trail, we’re in a more central location for the bike rides we lead. We have a lot of ideas in the works, but we’re still working out logistics.”

Proteus Bicycles has changed over the years. Originally a boutique bicycle manufacturer which one had three locations in the D.C. metro area, it was sold to a new owner in 2003, and Lemieux and Ben Bassett took over in 2012.

Today, the shop sees a growing number of bike commuters and even leads a 16-mile group commuter ride at 6 a.m. Tuesdays on the Anacostia River Trail to Yards Park in D.C.
