How Trivia Night Is Growing on Route 1

Trivia buffs along the Route 1 corridor can now play four nights a week locally if they want, and a fifth may be coming as early as next year.

The week begins on Mondays, when Looney’s Pub in College Park hosts a trivia night beginning at 7 p.m. Pizzeria Paradiso in Hyattsville and Cornerstone Grill and MilkBoy ArtHouse in College Park hold trivia nights on Tuesday nights. On Wednesdays, Looney’s holds another trivia contest at 7 p.m., and College Park’s Board and Brew holds one on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m.

Players have the opportunity to qualify to win over $5,000 in the Tournament of Champions. Two times a year, finalists and free pass winners from all District Trivia venues compete for the cash prize.

The trivia nights are popular on the Route 1 corridor in part because of the number of undergrads, graduate students and faculty members at the University of Maryland who live in the area, a representative of District Trivia told the Hyattsville Wire.

But they’re also a smart way for local bars and restaurants to bring in more customers on what would otherwise be a slow night. That’s one reason Denizens Brewing Co. is planning on hosting its own trivia night when it opens at Riverdale Park Station next spring.

MilkBoy ArtHouse began hosting trivia in late August after noticing trivia’s success at its locations in Philadelphia, said events manager Renee Maffiore.

“The best part about hosting trivia at our bar, is that a basic demographic does not exist,” said Maffiore. “Every week we see students, local professionals, and professors alike all come in ready to partake. We’ve also gotten pretty good at convincing some of those at the bar that stopped in for a beer to join a team and stay.”

District Trivia charges $200 to run a trivia night. “A small fee well worth it,” according to Maffiore.
