Why Route 1’s Trolley Trail Day is a Big Deal

Three towns along the Route 1 corridor will hold the first-ever joint Trolley Trail Day this Saturday, June 8, and it promises to be a major celebration.

The daylong event, which will take place in spots along the hiking-and-biking trail in Hyattsville, Riverdale Park and College Park, includes live music, food, family activities and group fitness programs.

For the athletically minded, Posh Cycling and Fitness will have $10 classes all day (use the promo code TrolleyDay2019); College Park Parkrun will host two fun runs at 9 and 10:30 a.m.; Smile Herb Shop will hold an edible plant and mushroom ID walk; and indoor and outdoor yoga, barre and fitness classes and a trail walk are also planned.

There will be three different group bike rides: Proteus Bicycles will hold a casual breakfast ride with stops at Board and Brew, Shortcake Bakery and District Taco; Arrow Bicycle will take it from there with an Ale Ride with stops at Denizens, Town Center Market, Franklin’s, Sangfroid Distillery, Maryland Meadworks and Streetcar 82; and College Park Bicycles will host a 20-mile long-distance ride to the USDA research farm and back.

Families will have several options, including a Spring Fest at Pizzeria Paradiso and Art Works Now; and a scavenger hunt, live music and arts activities at the Old Parish House in College Park, Riverdale Park Station, Riverdale Park town center and the Hyattsville Justice Center.

If all of that is not enough, Trolley Trail Day coincides with Hyattsville’s international festival, which will be held at Heurich Park.

For the history-minded, Maryland Milestones will hold a free discussion of the role of the streetcar in the D.C. Metro area and the history of the Washington, Berwyn, and Laurel line on Wednesday.

Along with the development of Route 1, the streetcar tied together the towns from Mount Rainier to College Park in the early part of the 20th century in ways that can still be seen today. Trolley Trail Day is a great way to honor that history while bringing towns in the Route 1 corridor together anew.
