College Park Seeks Amazon Ties in Crystal City

College Park didn’t land the Amazon headquarters, so it’s doing the next best thing: moving in next door.

The University of Maryland is setting up shop in Crystal City, opening an 8,000-square-foot space to hold lectures, events and symposia designed to bring, faculty, students and alumni together with Amazon’s staff and other visitors.

The goal: to promote the university’s Discovery District as a great place to do business and its graduates as great workers for Amazon to hire.

The campus is not as far as it seems. With the extension of the Yellow Line to Greenbelt, the Crystal City Metro station is now a direct 36-minute train ride to the College Park Metro station, which is at the entrance to the Discovery District.

“Amazon HQ2 is a regional phenomenon, and we are just a Metro ride away,” university President Wallace Loh said in a statement.

The building at 241 18th St. South will also be home to a “pitch space” from a local real estate company seeking to lure businesses to Crystal City. Virginia Tech, meantime, is setting up a Potomac Yard campus also designed to be close to Amazon.
