Route 1’s Taqueria Habanero Tops Washingtonian

Taqueria Habanero beat out heavy competition to snag a spot among the top D.C. area restaurants in the last year.

The College Park restaurant located at 8145 Baltimore Avenue, which also has a location in Columbia Heights, was voted the favorite Mexican spot in the greater D.C. area in the Washingtonian’s 2019 Reader’s Favorite Restaurants.

It beat out Oyamel, the ceviche and small plates spot from celebrity chef José Andrés in Penn Quarter, which took the No. 2 slot, and Mexican fusion chain Taco Bamba, which was in third place.

The magazine noted Taqueria Habanero had “standout sopes and tacos on freshly made and pressed tortillas.”

Accolades are nothing new for Taqueria Habanero, which also received a Bib Gourmand award from Michelin in October, while Washington Post food critic Tim Carman wrote the owners “created a restaurant even better than the first one” in their College Park location.

It was also voted the best Latin American restaurant in the Hyattsville Wire’s 2019 Best of Route 1 reader poll.

In December, College Park approved a liquor license for the eatery, which will begin serving a variety of cocktails and other alcoholic drinks this month. It also just celebrated its one-year anniversary in College Park December 17.

Meanwhile, the owners of Taqueria Habanero, Dio Montero and Mirna Alvarado, also opened up a new bar in 2019 in D.C. called Tequila & Mezcal, which been getting lots of attention including a recent nod from Eater DC.
