The new Hyattsville public library at 6530 Adelphi Road may be delayed by a few weeks and have some minor interior changes due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Michael Gannon, chief operating officer of the Prince George’s County library system, told the Hyattsville Wire that construction was delayed on some interior work due to social distancing requirements and the difficulty in getting some materials due to closed factories, but the target opening date for the $27.3 million project is still next spring.
“We always build in some extra time due to the fact that there are always unforeseen delays on any major construction project,” he said.
As with other construction projects in Maryland, work has continued during the lockdowns, but with workers practicing social distancing, wearing masks, having increased access to handwashing stations and being monitored for illness.
No structural changes will be made to the building because of coronavirus, but the interior may be moved around a little, according to Gannon.
“We are looking at furniture arrangement,” he said. “It was always the plan to scatter the public access PCs around the building so that will encourage social distancing.”
