The brew scene on the Route 1 corridor is growing again, as Patent Brewing Co. prepares to open a “lab space” in Hyattsville.

The science-oriented brewing advisors have long planned some kind of space for its extensive catalog of yeasts and bacteria, but the coronavirus pandemic put that plan on hold.

Now, Patent Brewing has signed a lease for a lab at 4633 42nd Pl.— just across Route 1 — that it will share with Streetcar 82 Brewing Co. and Maryland Meadworks, who will primarily use the space for packaging and storage.

“We are planning to use the space as a yeast lab — to store and propagate different strains of yeast,” co-owner Krissi Humbard told the Hyattsville Wire.” We will also be able to provide breweries and homebrewers with some quality control services such as water testing and contamination control.”

Sparked by Hyattsville co-founder Matt Humbard’s background in microbiology, Patent has a collection of a few hundred yeasts and bacteria which it makes available to other brewers and use in its own beers. It already provides yeasts for Streetcar 82 and is working with Maryland Meadworks.

Its new space won’t be open to the public and Patent will continue selling yeast through its website.
