New Hyattsville Library Aims for Opening by Late July

Work on the new Hyattsville public library is expected to be completed by mid-summer.

The library at 6530 Adelphi Rd. was slated for a spring opening, but has now been pushed back to the summer.

Michael Gannon, chief operating officer for support services at the Prince Georges County Memorial Library System, told the Hyattsville Wire that they now hope to be done sometime in July.

Two artists are also at work in creating public art for the building. They were chosen after a review by the project advisory committee for the county’s Art in Public Places program done by a group that included the Hyattsville Wire late last year.

Mount Rainier’s Valerie Theberge, who made the fish mural at the Melrose Skate Park, the courtyard at Artisan 4100 and the oven at Pizzeria Paradiso, was selected for an exterior project, while Curtis Woody, an Upper Marlboro artist who works in mixed media, was chosen for the interior.

Three other finalists will receive a $500 honorarium for their proposals.

The new library will include a large green roof to reduce stormwater with PVC material to stop the “heat island” effect, solar panels, an energy-efficient and smart HVAC system further reducing energy consumption, and electric car-charging stations.

The building’s exterior is constructed using locally sourced brick, durable terracotta panels, as well as recycled components. When the library is complete, there will be signage educating the public about the building’s sustainable features.
