Suga & Spice Plans Opening in Hyattsville Around Halloween

Renowned D.C. Chef Jeffeary Miskiri plans to open a Caribbean-influenced Southern restaurant in Hyattsville on or around Halloween weekend.

Located at 5557 Baltimore Ave., Suite 1000, next to Chipotle in the Shoppes at Arts District Hyattsville, Suga & Spice will blend his Southern roots with his wife Shatorya’s West Indian home cooking.

Crews are currently working on a finishing up a modern and casual new interior that incorporates design elements from the Caribbean, with a colorful graffiti-inspired mural along one wall.

The menu will include dishes such as jerk shrimp with sweet grits cake or jerk chicken and waffles and for dessert there will be items such as banana pudding and peach cobbler. The restaurant will have limited seating indoors but will have outside seating available.

“The two cuisines will blend with a lot of natural partings and combinations from sweets to savory and a lot of foods that complement each other,” Miskiri told the Hyattsville Wire.

Like other restaurateurs, Miskiri said the opening has been delayed because getting permits has taken longer due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Miskiri, who is behind Po Boy Jim in the Atlas District and Creole on 14th in Columbia Heights, said that he chose Hyattsville for Suga & Spice because it is a very diverse area and other restaurants have done well here.

“I believe the restaurant scene in the surrounding areas is changing for the good and it’s making the necessary changes for it to be a great food destination,” he said.

Suga & Spice recently made Eater D.C.’s notable list of 20 “most anticipated” eateries opening in the D.C. area this fall.
