How Green Owl Design is Revamping Route 1

Co-owners Angela Justice and Erica Riggio are revamping a historic strip near Streetcar 82 Brewing Co., are working with Sangfroid Distilling to build a new tasting room, and helped create Polka Dot Park and revamp two other buildings nearby in partnership with Urban Investment Partners. They were also behind the Instagram-friendly Handmade in Hyattsville mural, and, most recently, helped revamp two buildings at 5804 Baltimore Ave. in Hyattsville, including a family doctor’s office

Appropriately enough, Green Owl itself is located in a historic building that was revamped long ago. Built in 1910 initially as a wooden house, the Maryland Building at 5303 Baltimore Ave. was later covered in brick and limestone in 1930, and today is designated as a historic building by the Maryland Historical Trust.

Green Owl Design is also part of a group of area businesses, including Tanglewood WorksVigilante Coffee and Franklins Restaurant, called the SoHy Collective, which is promotes arts projects and events in the area.

Apart from their design business, Green Owl also run a small boutique in the same location and now it, too, is getting revamped.

Justice told the Hyattsville Wire that Green Owl recently changed up its merchandise to “reflect a more curated display of merchandise that follows trending color palettes and seasonally selected items.”

As before, most of the items for sale are from local artists and manufacturers found through social media or at festivals and fairs. In fact, two items for sale now — Leda Black’s artwork and Sony’s “Zen Origins’ line of vegan and recycled leather — connected with Green Owl at the Hyattsville Arts & Ales Festival.

“We keep certain lines of merchandise year-round, such as candles and other decor staples, but we refresh a majority of the  merchandise seasonally. The local artwork exhibited changes quarterly,” Justice said. “We always want to give our shoppers something new to experience.”

The boutique is open Wednesdays through Fridays noon to 7 p.m. and Saturdays noon to 5 p.m., but Justice and Riggio are often working at other hours, so if you see the Open sign on the door, be sure to just go on in.
