New Hyattsville Library to Hold Grand Opening March 30

The new Hyattsville library is planning to hold its official grand opening for the public on Wednesday, March 30, after breaking ground more than three years ago.

Festivities for the long-awaited opening day at 6530 Adelphi Rd. are scheduled for 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, library tours, bilingual story time, a scavenger hunt, hands-on activities throughout the new library, and even giveaways.

Special guests for the ribbon-cutting ceremony include County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, County Councilmember Deni Taveras, library system CEO Roberta Phillips and board president Toni Smith, and Rico Newman, a member of the Elders Council of the Choptico Band of Piscataway Indians.

The new library features 84 public computers, the largest number of any Prince George’s County library branch; two conference rooms; an art room; a vending cafe with bookstore area; a reading terrace and garden; a room with a collection focused on local history and genealogy in Prince George’s County; and a classical children’s literature-themed children’s area.

It also features commissioned art installations by Valerie Theberge, who created an outdoor mosaic tiled mural below the renovated flying saucer, and Curtis Woody, who create a large mural inside the library entrance honoring the history of Hyattsville and the greater community.

In addition, the new library, which is one of the largest in the county, features solar panels, vehicle charging stations, and locally sourced bricks. It is the first county library branch to also include a garage and vegetation green roof for stormwater mitigation.

Originally scheduled to open in spring 2021, the new branch faced a number of delays  attributed to the pandemic pushing its opening date back by a year.

Face masks are required for the grand opening for all attendees ages two and up. More information is available here.
