The owners of popular College Park eatery Taqueria Habanero are planning a new spinoff restaurant in Hyattsville.

Called Cocineros, the Spanish word for chef, the restaurant is described as an “off-the-hook Latin American eatery” on its new Instagram page.

As we’ve noted before, about one-third of the city’s population is Hispanic, according to the 2010 Census, with the majority listing a family origin in Central American countries like El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.

So it makes sense that the menu at Cocineros covers a wide range of South and Central American dishes, including empanadas (Chile), pupusas (El Salvador), tostones (Venezuela and Honduras) as well as some Mexican dishes.

There are also some interesting twists on Maryland favorites, like a crab cake sandwich, steak and cheese and a “Latin-style hot dog.”

The restaurant will be located in the small building housing Friendly Faces Barber Shop at 3513 East-West Highway in the parking lot of the Giant grocery store next to the Prince George’s Plaza Metro station.

The owners are working with Green Owl Design, a Hyattsville firm that has worked on a number of Route 1 redesigns.
